Sustainable Impact Challenge

OFF-GRID ENERGY

Today the main challenge within the energy sector is to provide access to efficient and sustainable energy that is universally available to a growing global population, while also fighting climate change. This challenge will determine new consumption models and standards on how energy is produced. We are seeking startups with solutions ranging from storage & battery management to innovative payment schemes, for rural areas of Angola.

Solution directions

Access to Electricity and Clean Fuel

Off-grid electricity and heat generation solutions to give access to electricity which could accommodate the needs of households and communities in the lowly industrialized area in Angola.

Storage & Battery management

Electricity and heat storage solutions and battery management solutions for these storages for households and communities in lowly industrialized area in Angola.

Innovative Payment schemes

Pricing models for electricity services such as pay-as-you-go, pay-per-use solutions, and more.

Notable projects

Adam: our photovoltaic project in Tunisia

Eni opened the Adam photovoltaic project in the Tataouine Governate in the south of the country in December 2019. The energy generated by this 5 MWp plant is  used at the nearby Adam oilfield site: lowering gas usage by saving the equivalent of 6,500 tonnes of CO2 per year, resulting in 5 MWp peak capacity, 2.2/1.5MWp/MWh battery storage and 6,500 tonnes/year CO₂ saved. The Tataouine Photovoltaic Project, also in Tunisia’s south, is currently undergoing commissioning and will provide energy to the local grid. Through an arrangement with the national firm, Societé Tunisienne de l’Electricite et du Gaz, the plant will have a maximum installed capacity of 10 MWp and will supply the national electricity grid with over 20 GWh of energy each year (STEG). Emergering 10 MWp peak plant capacity, 20 GWh/year energy supplied to the national electricity grid and 260,000 tonnes CO₂ saved from the atmosphere over 25 years.

Eni and SONATRACH sign a series of agreements in the upstream, research and development and decarbonisation sectors

Eni and Sonatrach, Algeria’s governmental oil and gas corporation, opened a solar project in Bir Rebaa North in July 2019. (BRN). This 10 MWp power plant provides green energy to the BRN oil treatment center, replacing around 15% of the site’s prior electricity from the national grid. Resulting in 10 MWp peak plant capacity, 20 Wh/year energy supplied to the national electricity grid and 260,000 tonnes CO₂ saved from the atmosphere over 25 years.

OPV: photovoltaic cells that can be printed on film

Eni’s Renewable Energy and Environmental R&D Centre, together with the Technical Research Center of Finland, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), National Research Council (CNR) and many universities in Italy, developed a system that generates electricity from the sun using ultra-thin films of lightweight, strong and flexible photoactive polymers It has the advantage of being able to use a very thin plastic film that is printable like newsprint, and it is far lighter than current silicon technology, plus more flexible panels can be built, which can be integrated into different systems and situations at a reduced cost.
