Sustainable Impact Challenge

Environmental Protection

Environmental protection is an essential topic nowadays. We want to work together with skilled startups and scaleups who have a shared ambition of fighting climate change by producing and providing sustainable energy for all while encouraging new sustainable standards across the whole industry. For this reason, we are looking for innovative solutions around biodiversity & nature protection, natural disaster management, and circular economy & waste management.

Solution directions

Biodiversity & Nature protection

Innovative products and services to plant, protect and monitor forests, to support regenerative agriculture as well as for pest management.

Natural disaster management

Solutions for early disaster monitoring and prediction and for the management of natural disaster such as bush-forest fires, flood and drought.

Circular economy & Waste management

Innovative services and products to identify, separate recycle or reuse consumer waste (i.e. plastic, electronic waste) and even human waste for households and communities in lowly industrialized areas.

Notable projects

Ecofining™: turning organic waste into biofuel

In collaboration with Honeywell-UOP Eni developed and patented EcofiningTM technology which can process various types of biomass and not just vegetable oils such as palm or soya, to produce a high-quality biofuel that contains no oxygenated components and has a high cetane number, meaning improved performance. Implementing the process on an industrial level has enabled Eni to convert two conventional refineries into bio-refineries, one in Venice – the first of its kind in the world – and one in Gela, which has helped revive the refining sector.

Clean energy with a lower environmental impact

In November 2018, jointly with Sonatrach through Groupement Sonatrach-Agip (GSA), Eni took the first step in introducing PV technology in Algeria, by building a solar power plant in Block 403 at the BRN production site. The project is proof that renewable energy can effectively support Upstream activities and, at the same time, contribute to the protection of the planet. The project is an integral part of Eni’s strategy to change the energy mix of our activities, replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources.

Waste management in the community of Samboja in Indonesia

In 2018 Eni launched an initiative to help reduce waste, sharing a range of good practices with families in the community of Samboja (With more than 69,900 inhabitant – third largest population of the region). Eni offered help to the local government within a pilot project called “Clean, Green and Healthy Samboja”, creating a complete life cycle of waste management, boosted by the launching of competition between the local villages. The success of the pilot project led to consequently involving other villages. During the project, Eni educated the local community to follow a more clean and healthy lifestyle. They helped reduce waste and increase recycling, at the same time as getting people to use barren, abandoned, or unproductive land to grow fruit, vegetables, and flowers for their own consumption.
